The University Research Lab
A Major Metropolitan University System faced a critical bottleneck where researchers waited months for AI compute resources due to manual provisioning. The solution involved designing a menu-driven “Research Lab” Infrastructure as Code environment that automated the process, slashing provisioning time from 90 days to under four hours. This validated the insight that democratizing AI requires “hiding the plumbing” to let interfaces speak the researcher’s language rather than the administrator’s
CONTEXT (THE BLOCKAGE)
A [PUBLIC RESEARCH INSTITUTION] secured funding from a Regional AI Consortium, but research was paralyzed by a 2-to-3-month wait time for compute resources due to legacy manual provisioning.
THE ACTION
Designed a “Research Lab” menu-driven Infrastructure as Code (IaC) environment that automated the provisioning of AI/HPC resources.
THE RESULT
Reduced researcher provisioning latency from ~90 days to under 4 hours, effectively removing the infrastructure barrier to grant fulfillment.
Democratizing AI requires hiding the “plumbing”; the interface must speak the language of the researcher, not the systems administrator.
